Archstone Announces Winner of Art of Santa Monica Contest
Local artist wins six months of free gallery space for original art
SANTA MONICA – April 7, 2010 – Archstone, a leader in apartment investment and operations, announced that local artist Jodi Fuchs was named the winner of the first-annual Art of Santa Monica contest for her work titled “555: A Big Change is Coming.”
Archstone made the announcement April 2 at the Art of Santa Monica Awards Gala, which was hosted at the site of Fuchs’ brand-new art gallery at the Archstone Santa Monica on Main apartment community. Fuchs will receive six months of free rent to operate the art gallery and display her work, and a $1,000 gift card.
“Having received more than 150 high-quality entries in this contest, even narrowing down the finalists was quite a challenge,” said Alison Jardine, a judge for the contest and winner of Archstone’s Art of Elan contest in Dallas. “But I’m pleased with the final selection of Fuchs’ piece as the winner. It really stands out in all three of the categories – visual interest, content and artistic craftsmanship.”
Fuchs is a professional decorative painter with more than 20 years of experience in architectural painting. Her work includes a number of high-profile projects, including movie sets, celebrity homes, spa and resort properties and more. Some of her work has been featured in architectural publications.
As a result of painting surfaces to look old and weathered, Fuchs’ paintings often connote a sense of history. Her use of layered, complex color fields provides the perfect backdrop for more refined imagery. Her style is prevalent in “555: A Big Change is Coming,” which features artistic renditions of symbols of change and unity.
“My paintings could be described as visionary abstracts,” Fuchs said. “They are spontaneous explorations into what is currently fascinating me. Sometimes that is a concept – the poetics of breath, connection, chaos, yearning, expansion, love and divinity. Sometimes it's an image – lotus flowers, circles, targets and stripes. I like to see what happens in the moment."
The Art of Santa Monica Awards Gala hosted more than 100 art enthusiasts and artists, who had the opportunity to view the top 20 pieces entered into the contest. The Archstone Santa Monica, Santa Monica on Main and Citrus Suites communities sponsored the event along with Pourtal Wine Tasting Bar, La Grande Orange, Fashion Furniture and The Doves Hair Studio.
