Archstone-Smith Appoints Stephen R. Demeritt
to Its Board of Trustees

DENVER — September 22, 2006 — Archstone-Smith (NYSE:ASN) announced today that it has appointed Stephen R. Demeritt to its Board of Trustees. Mr. Demeritt is the former vice chairman of General Mills, a consumer foods company whose major U.S. brands include Big G cereal, Pillsbury, Betty Crocker, Progresso and Yoplait, with more than $11 billion in annual revenues. The nomination was unanimously recommended by Archstone-Smith's Nominating Committee, which solely comprises independent directors and is chaired by John M. Richman. Mr. Demeritt will serve on Archstone-Smith's Audit Committee and its Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee.
